Uzgen is a small town in the Kyrgyz part of the Fergana valley, located about 50 km from Osh, near the Karadarya river which flows to the second largest river of Central Asia, Syrdarya. It is a center of a largely agricultural province. It is populated mostly by Uzbeks, with small portions of Kyrgyzes, Russians and Tajiks.

Uzgen has been known since 2nd century BC, as a trading center on a route from Fergana Valley to Chinese Kashgar. The city has a number of ancient and medeival monuments, such as the Karakhanids Mausoleum of 12th century. The city's mazars (burials of saints and outstanding personalities) and fortresses attract local people and foreign tourists.
