Memorial Complex of Imam Al-Rukhari
Necropolis of outstanding Sunni theologian Imam Muhammad al-Bukhari (died in 870) was built near Samarkand. Al-Bukhari had phenomenal memory and analyzed thousands of hadiths - stories about the Prophet. His work resulted in summa of hadiths - 'Al-Djami as-Sahih' which was canonized in the 10th century as the main hadith anthology in Sunni tradition. In the 16th century the small mausoleum and mosque were built above the tomb of Imam al-Bukhari. In connection with the 1225th anniversary of Imam al-Bukhari and according to the decree of the government of Uzbekistan the new memorial complex was built in 1999 at the site of the old mausoleum.
