The cultural background of the area dates back to Scythians, who left monuments of their culture, now often submerged in water as the lake level rose about 8 meters since antiquity.
Issyk Kul was an important stop-over along the Great Silk Road leading from China to Europe. Because the lake never freezes, it served as a heaven for caravans which just passed the merciless deserts of western China.
